Well folks, like I said earlier, "If you want to make God laugh, make plans." Another little saying that can apply to our trip thus far is Murphy's Law... "anything that can go wrong, will go wrong."
Being that we were in San-Freaking Awesome- Antonio last night, we had to leave there by 6 am to make it to the border by 8ish...
Well our alarm went off at 5am... and we DID NOT HIT SNOOZE! We just turned it off altogether. So at 6am when I wake up again, we are trying to make a mad dash getting everything together, dogs in the car, la la la... and didn't get on the road until about 7:15ish...
Got to Eagle Pass just fine, filled up the tank from Shell (Thanks Bo and Jess!) and continued on our way to the border, to cross with no issues and begin our trek into Mexico!
Or so we hoped...
We cross the first border patrol, and I can't find my license, finally after about 5 minutes of FREAKING out, Abasi glaring at me and US/Mex border patrol officials probably thinking I was an idiot, one of the pointed out that my wallet on the floor of the car. UGH. Moving on.
They turn out to be quite nice, even look over our map with us and give us suggestions, muchas gracias to them!
Next we have to be checked by the Mexican military to see what was in our car and declare things if we need to. Well we have a bunch of junk with us, but nothing to really declare, so we were about to get going when Bentley, our beloved yet oh so dumb sometimes dog, JUMPED OUT OF THE BACK WINDOW and ran around the military check point. Picture it: 2 embarrassed gringos, Mexican military soldiers with M-16's and a big, goofy dog running around. Check that one off our list of fun things NOT to do again. Luckily they weren't mad or mean to us. In fact we didn't have the proper insurance papers with us, but we're informed kindly that there was a place just down the road that could do it for us... awesome!
Or so we hoped...
We get into Mexico and I (Krysta, shocking!) am driving. If I may say so myself, I really have a knack for foreign driving! We are looking all over the place for "seguro" or insurance. Well we can't find the place, so we keep driving, farther into Mexico... WITHOUT insurance. The thing is, in Mexico if we were to even get in a small fender bender, one or both of us could go to jail for not having the insurance because American insurance policies are null and void in Mexico and all Central American countries. Whomp whomp.
Abasi, being sufficiently fluent in Spanish, begins asking locals where to get it... and after a few failed attempts we find an office!!!
Or so we hoped...
ITS SUNDAY!! Nada está abierto el domingo!
Finally, with no choice left, we cross BACK TO TEXAS to find a place to print out the documents we need. AHH, when life hands you limes, make a margarita, no?
Or so we hoped...
Is this getting old or what? Try actually doing it. Not only did we have to get a hotel for another night, because by the time we got anything done, it would be too late to cross back into Mexico and make our destination safely in daylight. Then we had to sneak the dogs into our room (shh), but this room didn't have Wifi access, so we had to move all of our stuff across the building to another room.
Then we got Wifi but it was in and out... couldn't pull up the information to get a policy, and of course being Sunday most companies we could call were closed also.
But hey, we're Krysta and Abasi... we don't give up, and we finally got our policy, just print it out and we are good to go!
YEP... OR SO WE HOPED!
The hotel didn't have a printer we could use, and not only was the closest Kinkos 55 miles away in El Paso, but the only office capable store in town... was closed on Sundays. I called Walmart to see if they had any way to help, I even called other hotels acting like a guest to try and get access but they wanted my room number and name, haha! Silver lining? People will surprise you in the most amazing way!
The young man, and I say this being 24 so he was clearly younger than me... or had great genes... offered to call his brother to bring his lap top AND PRINTER from HOME to let us access and print out our policy! I have to say it was on of the nicest things someone has ever done and if people were more inclined to help one another the way this guy did, the world would be a better place fo sho! I am pretty convinced someone from Liberty Mutual Insurance met this kid and was then inspired for the "paying it forward" commercials. I plan too.
So finally it did end the way we needed it to. We got our papers thanks to our hero at La Quinta, Abasi got A LOT of sleep, I got to update our blog while drinking a quart of Corona and even got to Skype with my parents for the first time!
Hopefully Murphy says adios at the border tomorrow, because it's official, as of tomorrow we're crossing into Mexico and NOT turning back... I HOPE!!!
Pura Vida.
